Vote for HEELING AUTISM to win a 0k Pepsi Refresh Grant! Detail below… I have a son with severe autism. In late May 2010 we had an amazing addition to our family, an Autism Service Dog named Paula. Paula is a 3 1/2 year old black lab who has been specially trained to work with children with autism. Her main goals are to keep Jake safe and to offer companionship. We have the same rights as a blind person to bring Paula with us EVERYWHERE. And so far, 2 months in, it has been amazing. Michelle and I were fearful that it was going to be like having another kid in the beginning, but to be honest, Paula is like haveing another adult around, another set of eyes on Jake, another friend to hang with. We got this dog for FREE from an amazing organization called Heeling Autism. They are an offshoot of the organization Guiding Eyes for the Blind. (www.guidingeyes.org When we got Paula we had to wait for a year. Now, due to lack of funding and personnel the waitlist is 2 years. It kills me to think of parents of an autistic child waiting for 2 years to receive this gift. And that is why I am so passionate about Heeling Autism winning a 0000 grant from Pepsi Refresh.
